Withdrawal from Religious Education
Our Approach to Religious Education
At Seven Fields Primary School, Religious Education (RE) is taught as a vital part of our broad and balanced curriculum. RE lessons aim to help pupils understand a variety of religious and non-religious worldviews, fostering respect, open-mindedness, and critical thinking about the world they are growing up in.
While RE is a compulsory subject for all registered pupils aged 5 to 16, we fully respect and acknowledge the legal rights of parents regarding their child’s religious education.
The Right to Withdraw
In accordance with the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 (Sections 69 and 71), parents have the statutory right to withdraw their children from all or any part of Religious Education lessons and/or Collective Worship.
-
No Reason Required: Parents are not legally obliged to give a reason for wanting to withdraw their child.
-
Full or Partial Withdrawal: Parents can choose to withdraw their child from specific topics or lessons, or from the RE curriculum entirely.
-
School Compliance: The school is legally required to comply with a parent's request for withdrawal.
How to Request a Withdrawal
If you are considering withdrawing your child from RE lessons or collective worship, we warmly encourage you to discuss this with Mrs Young (Head Teacher) before making a final decision.
Note: This discussion is not a means to block your request, but simply an opportunity for the school to clarify what is covered in our curriculum, understand your specific wishes, and ensure that your child's educational and supervision needs are managed seamlessly during these times.
If you still wish to proceed, please submit your request in writing to Mrs Young gyoung@sevenfieldsprimary.org so that alternative supervision arrangements can be formally organized for your child.
