Early Years

In Early Years & Reception the children will incorporate these aspects of Geography:

 

  • Enjoy books about places

  • Play with a globe

  • Show interest in a continuous provision area such as a travel agents

  • Know how to describe different types of buildings

  • Understand the concept of close and far away

Year 1

In year 1 the children will learn:

 

The Four Seasons

  • To know the 4 seasons in the year and months in each

  • To know what the weather is like in each season

  • To know plants, trees and animals change across the seasons

  • To know people do different activities and wear different clothes depending on the season

 

Where Do I Live?

  • To name and locate the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world

  • To locate the UK on a world map

  • To identify and locate the countries and capitals of the UK

  • To name a human and physical feature of each country of the UK

 

At The Farm

  • To know the different types of farms and why they are important

  • To know some of the features of a farm

  • To know how the seasons affect life on a farm

  • To know some difference between life on a farm and life in a town

  • To know what the 4 points on a compass are and use them to navigate a map

 

 

Year 2

In year 2 the children learn:

 

Seas & Coasts

  • To locate and identify oceans and continents

  • To know natural and man-made features at the seaside

  • To know the UK is an island and the seas that surround it

  • To compare seaside resorts to other places

  • To know how to describe to get from one place to another using directional language

 

Let's Explore London

  • To locate London on a map and describe its location

  • To know some different landmarks in London

  • To know how to navigate between landmarks using compass directions

  • To know some key physical features of London

  • To know how the seasons and weather patterns affect human activity in London

 

Let's Go on Safari

  • To know that Kenya is near the equator and I can describe its wet and dry seasons

  • To know Kenya has many different landscapes and can name them

  • To know that people in Kenya live in different ways

  • To explain some similarities and differences between life in Kenya and the UK

  • To know some animals found in Kenya

Year 3

In year 3 the children learn:

 

Volcanoes

  • To know where volcanoes are found in the world

  • To know how volcanoes affect people and the environment

  • To know the names and locations of some famous volcanoes

  • To know what tectonic plates are and what the ring of fire is

  • To know the Earth is made of different layers an use this to explain how volcanoes form and erupt

 

Our European Neighbours

  • To name and locate countries in Europe

  • To name and locate a variety of capital cities in Europe

  • To know some human and physical features of some different European countries

  • To know some geographical features of Europe

  • To compare and contrast some European cities

 

The USA

  • To know the USA has 50 states and can locate some of them on a map

  • To know the USA is split into 6 regions and can identify the states in each

  • To know about different American geological features

  • To know about some of the largest/most famous cities in the USA

  • To know about national parks in the USA and their features

 

Year 4

In year 4 the children learn:

 

Countries of the World

  • To know how to use a world map, globe and atlas to find and name countries and continents
  • To know the names and locations of some important countries and capital cities
  • To know that different countries have different human and physical features and can name some
  • To know which climatic zone some different countries belong to
  • To know what some key lines on a world map are (latitude, longitude, equator, prime meridian)

 

Rainforests

  • To know where rainforests are found on a world map
  • To know some countries that have areas of rainforest
  • To know the layers of the rainforest and the features of each
  • To know about the role of the water cycle in rainforests
  • To know how people live and use the rainforests
  • To know why rainforests are under threat
  • To know measures that are being taken to help save the rainforest

 

Year 5

In year 5 the children learn:

 

Mountains

  • To know how mountains are formed
  • To know where the major mountain ranges are in the world
  • To know the names and locations of mountain ranges in the UK
  • To know how mountains affect weather and climate
  • To describe and name the key features of a mountain

 

Rivers

  • To know what the water cycle is and describe each stage using appropriate vocabulary
  • To know how rivers are formed
  • To know about the features of rivers and identify them
  • To know about the causes of river pollution and the effect on the environment
  • To know about a river in the world in detail

 

North America

  • To know the 23 countries that make up North America and some capital cities
  • To know some of the different climatic zones in North America and compare them
  • To know some physical and human features in North America
  • To compare the physical and human geography of the UK with a region in North America

Year 6

In year 6 the children learn:

 

The UK

  • To know and describe key geographical features of the UK
  • To identify and locate the counties of the UK and 9 regions
  • To locate and identify towns and cities of the UK
  • To know the major hills and mountains of the UK
  • To name and locate some major rivers in the UK
  • To know how to compare and contrast regions in the UK

 

South America

  • To know the 12 countries and 2 territories that make up South America
  • To name and locate some of the different climates in South America
  • To know about the major mountain ranges in South America
  • To know about trade and industry in South America
  • To compare an area of South America to the UK

 

Local Area

  • To know about the economic activity of our local area
  • To know how land in our local area is used
  • To know about rivers in our local area
  • To know about the physical topography of our local area
  • To know about settlements in our local area and how they’ve changed
