Early Years

EYFS:

·        Notice patterns with strong contrasts and be attracted by patterns resembling the human face. 

·        Starts making marks intentionally. 

·        Explores paint, using fingers and other parts of their body. 

·        Uses paint brushes and other tools to paint. 

·        Expresses ideas and feelings through mark making. 

·        Begins to give meaning to marks made. 

·        Explores using different materials. 

·        Use imagination as they consider what they can do with different materials. 

·        Make simple models which express their ideas. 

·        Create closed shapes with continuous lines and begin to use these shapes to represent objects. 

·        Draw with increasing complexity and detail, such as representing a face with circles and including detail. 

·        Use drawing to represent ideas like movement or loud noises. 

·        Show different emotions in their drawings and paintings, like happiness, sadness, fear etc. 

·        Explore colour and colour mixing.

 

Reception:

·        Explore, use and refine a variety of artist effects to express their ideas and feelings. 

·        Return to and build on their previous learning, refining ideas and developing their ability to represent them. 

·        Create collaboratively, sharing ideas, resources and skills. 

·        Painting: To know about the work of Kandinsky. Produce their own painting inspired by Kandinsky. 

·        Printing: To know about the work of Andy Warhol. Produce their own prints using repeated patterns 

·        Sculpture: To know about the work of Andy Goldsworhty. Produce their own sculpture using natural materials.

Year 1

In Year 1 the children learn:

Self Portraits 

  • To use different kinds of sketching pencils and experiment with them 

  • To explore the different types of paints and the different effects they create 

  • To accurately place facial features and identify shapes in faces 

  • To create a self portrait 

Colour Creations

  • To know the primary colours 

  • To know who Piet Mondrian is and create work in his style 

  • To mix primary colours to make secondary colours 

  • To know how to create light and dark shades of a colour 

  • To know who Kandinsky and create art work in his style 

Yayoi Kusama

  • Experiment with different tools and materials to create polka dot patterns

  • Use collage to recreate famous artwork developing cutting and sticking skills

  • Create dot-based paintings selecting appropriate tools to produce dots of various sizes and colours

  • Explore 3D form using by shaping clay using simple rolling and moulding techniques 

Year 2

In Year 2 the children learn:

  • To create imaginative portraits using objects and materials that represent people or ideas 

  • To use collage, sketching and painting to show texture, colour and pattern in artwork 

  • To know how artists like Arcimboldo used symbolism in their work 

  • To choose and combine materials to express ideas clearly 

  • To identify similarities and differences between my work and that of famous artists

Paper Art

  • To identify and describe various types of paper and their uses 

  • To create collages using paper

  • To manipulate tissue paper to achieve specific artist effects

  • To construct 3 dimensional forms using paper 

  • To create own paper sculptures 

Super Sculptures

  • To create sculptures with a human form using various materials 

  • To design and create sculptures that incorporate ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ spaces 

  • To construct kinetic sculptures that incorporate movement 

  • To create sculptures using a variety of light, shape and colour

Year 3

In Year 3 the children learn:

Vincent Van Gogh

  • Experiment with mixing paints to create tints and shades using colour to reflect mood and depth 

  • Develop skills in sketching and painting 

  • Use expressive lines to create a sense of movement 

  • Practise sketching from different perspectives 

  • Create expressive portraits in the style of Van Gogh

Plant Art

  • To create tints, shades and tones of colours 

  • To develop printing skills, creating designs using printing blocks

  • To understand and create the illusion of depth in their artwork 

  • To develop observational skills to create detailed illustrations

  • To create sculptures using clay adding or removing detail 

Warhol Pop Art Movement

  • To use Warhol’s blotted line technique to create their own artwork 

  • To create work inspired by Warhol

  • To design their own Pop art using items from popular culture 

  • To evaluate their artwork and the artwork of others 

Year 4

In Year 4 the children learn:

Indian Art

  • Experiment with 2D and 3D decorative techniques

  • Create intricate pattern designs focussing on symmetry

  • Create stamps to create repeating patterns and textile designs 

  • Use coloured salt and symmetrical designs to make artwork

Seurat and Pointillism 

  • To experiment with various methods to create Pointillist effects 

  • To mix primary, secondary and tertiary colours and identify complementary colour pairs using Pointillism 

  • To use Pointillism to create shading and blend colours in artwork

  • To plan and create own Pointillist artwork

Sonia Delaunay

  • To recreate a portrait in the style of Sonia Delaunay 

  • To experiment with the art style Orphism

  • To create a feeling of rhythm in art 

  • To design clothes inspired by Sonia Delaunay’s work 

  • To choose complementary and harmonious colours in artwork  

Year 5

In Year 5 the children learn:

Landscape Art

  • To explore perspective in landscape art, including identifying horizon lines, vanishing points and using construction lines to draw objects in perspective 

  • To experiment with various watercolour techniques to pain landscapes 

  • To create atmospheric perspective applying tints and shades with different mediums]

  • To create abstract landscapes focussing on patterns

Wassily Kandinsky

  • To know about Wassily Kandinsky’s life and artistic development

  • Explore ways to represent ideas, people, places and objects using lines, shapes, patterns and colours

  • To sketch abstract versions by adapting them through shading grids 

  • To create abstract art inspired by Kandinsky using paints

Sculpting Vases 

  • To use appropriate techniques and tools with modelling materials 

  • To add decorative features such as plaits, imprints and other embellishments

  • To follow a design to make a vase out of clay 

  •  To examine vase designs and use these as inspiration for their own 

  • To sketch designs and features to create a portfolio 

Year 6

In Year 6 the children learn:

Talking Textiles

  • To explore how stories can be communicated through art 

  • To experiment with textile techniques including stitching, layering, painting on fabric and quilting 

  • To create a textile artwork that tells a story following a design 

  • To evaluate work and reflect on what went well, what could be improved and suggesting alterations 

Islamic Art

  • To investigate geometric and tessellating patterns

  • To create geometric patterns including using negative space 

  • To use calligraphy as an art form using calligraphy tools 

  • To explore arabesque designs and create a motif through carving 

  • To design and create art featuring geometric patterns 

Space Art

  • To explore the concepts of foreground, middle ground and background to create depth and balance 

  • To use sketchbooks to plan and test ideas 

  • To apply colour theory to create specific moods 

  • To develop blending and shading skills using soft pastels experimenting with techniques 

  • To use various painting tools and techniques to create texture and movement
