Early Years

EYFS:

  • Starts making marks intentionally.

In Year 1 the children will be learning:

  • Describe designs (using pictures, models, diagrams, mock-ups etc) To know how to follow a criteria to design their own product. 
  • Explain what is being made and why the audience will like it. 
  • Choose appropriate tools and explain why they are being used. 
  • Describe how their product works, evaluating what went well and what could be done differently

Stick Man Mechanism

  • To create a slider mechanism
  • To create a lever mechanism
  • To create a moving scene
  • To evaluate my moving scene

Puppets

  • To develop and practise sewing skills. (Running stitch and over stitch)
  • To be able to design a glove puppet.
  • To be able to follow a design to make a puppet.
  • To be able to evaluate a finished product.

Teddy Bears Picnic

  • To make Teddy Bear Biscuits using a set of instructions.
  • To design a food skewer to take on a picnic.
  • To make picnic food using their design sheet.
  • To evaluate picnic food
  • To find out how to handle and prepare a variety of fruits and vegetables.
  • To be able to design a recipe to include fruit and/or vegetables.

Year 2

In Year 2 the children will be learning:

  • To be able to use levers and pivots to create a moving mechanism
  • To be able to create a wheel mechanism

Pizzas

  • To examine, describe and categorise a variety of bread-based products.
  • To examine, describe and categorise a variety of pizza toppings.
  • To be able to make and evaluate a food product based on a design.

Year 3

In Year 3 the children will be learning:

Knowledge of DT

  • Gather information to help design a successful product (i.e. by asking others' views) and can suggest ideas for improving plans. 
  • Produce a detailed plan with labelled diagrams, a written explanation and step-by-step guide.
  • Use a range of tools accurately. 
  • Measure, mark out, assemble and join materials and components with some accuracy.
  • Evaluate the appearance and usability of their own product and pre-existing products. 
  • Explain how the original design could be improved, considering the appearance and usability.

Moving Monsters

  • To investigate techniques for making simple pneumatic systems.
  • To be able to design a monster including a moving pneumatic system.
  • To be able to make a monster with a moving pneumatic part.
  • To be able to evaluate a finished product.

Light Up Signs

  • To select and use tools, equipment, materials and components to make the enclosure of a decorative illuminated sign.
  • To construct a working circuit with one or more lights, and fit it in a decorative illuminated sign.
  • To investigate ways in which computers can be used to program and control lights in a product.

Food of the USA

  • To prepare and bake a traditional American dessert.
  • To find out how Native Americans grew, caught, gathered, prepared and cooked food.
  • To know how food in the USA is influenced by other cultures.
  • To understand the value of a varied diet and eating together.

Year 4

In Year 4 the children will be learning:

Knowledge of DT

  • Gather information to help design a successful product (i.e. by asking others' views) and can suggest ideas for improving plans. 
  • Produce a detailed plan with labelled diagrams, a written explanation and step-by-step guide.
  • Use a range of tools accurately.

  • Evaluate the appearance and usability of their own product and pre-existing products. 
  • Explain how the original design could be improved, considering the appearance and usability.

Cartouche (Clay)

  • To use a range of clay modelling techniques (rolling, pinching, carving, joining) to shape and form clay effectively
  • To design and create a cartouche ensuing it has a name, pattern and a symbol
  • To join clay using water to smooth joins and handling tools correctly
  • To evaluate the finished cartouche

Seasonal Stocking

  •  To explore different ways to join fabric using sewing skills
  • To use stitches and decorations like buttons or sequins to improve the look of a design
  • Design a seasonal stocking using my knowledge of stitches and decoration techniques
  • To follow a design plan to create a well-made stocking

Torches

  • To create a switch to use in a torch design
  • To create a torch casing using a 3D net
  • To design a torch that meets a specific design criteria
  • To create torch with a simple circuit using a range of materials and components

Year 5

In Year 5 the children will be learning:

Knowledge of DT

  • Use a range of information to inform a design (i.e. market research using surveys, interviews, questionnaires or web-based resources). 
  • Produce a detailed plan, with cross-sectional diagrams and computer-generated designs).
  • Refine and justify plans as necessary.
  • Use a range of tools and equipment precisely. 
  • Consider the aesthetic qualities and functionality of their product and refine details as necessary.
  • Evaluate the appearance and test the function of a product (own and pre-existing) against the original criteria, saying whether it is fit for purpose.
  • Suggest improvements that could be made, considering materials, methods, sustainability of the product and how much a product costs to make. 

Roman Purse

  •  To use templates for assembling fabric shapes accurately to prepare for sewing
  • To use a fastening method (ties, flaps, toggles or drawstrings) as a way to secure a purse
  • Add simple decorative details (tassels, braids or edging) that reflect Roman design
  • Evaluate durability and suggest improvements

Moving Toys

  • To explore how difference shaped cams affect the movement
  • To experiment with different ways of strengthening a structure
  • To design and make a moving toy with a cam mechanism
  • To safely use tools and materials to build a sturdy toy based on my design

Building Bridges

  • To know that different elements of bridges provide support in different ways
  • To understand how suspension bridges are able to span long distances.
  • To develop criteria and design a prototype bridge for a purpose.
  • To analyse and evaluate products according to design criteria.

Year 6

In Year 6 the children will be learning:

Clay Viking Longship

  • To use coiling to build up the walls and structure of a Viking longship.
  • To apply slip decoration to add colour, contrast, or raised details to a clay model.
  • To experiment with texture and surface effects to represent materials such as wood, rope, or carved decoration.
  • To plan and construct a 3D clay model that accurately reflects historical features of a Viking longship, including a dragon-head prow.

Great British Dishes

  • To learn about and know some dishes from each of the three home nations
  • To know how to plan, shop for and cook a meal
  • To prepare ingredients safely and hygienically using a range of food preparation skills
  • To follow and adapt recipes to create traditional British dishes
  • To understand seasonality, sourcing and food production in Britain

Bird House Builders

  • To draw 3D diagrams and exploded diagrams
  • To practise woodwork skills
  • To design and draw diagrams of a bird house to suit a specific bird
  • To follow a plan and make amendments to make construction easier
  • To know the tools, equipment and safety precautions needed to work with wood
